My becoming a writer grew out of the time I spent at The Second City in Toronto.  There was such a buzz around the place, due to the success of Saturday Night Live and SCTV, that producers were appearing at the theatre on a regular basis to hire people, hoping to create the next big thing.

I can’t say that I remember any of those projects very well, or at least they seem to have blended into one seamless series of recollections indistinguishable from each other.  But they did allow me to claim to be a writer.  So I figured I had better learn what that meant.

Over the years I have written everything from direct mail copy to screenplays.  I have written corporate video, stage plays, sketch comedy, radio drama, speeches and that journey has led me to confirm at least two things.  That on many occasions the quote at the top of the page is very accurate.  And that writing is writing. 

How good the writing is has more to do with the commitment of the writer and the person for whom they are writing than it does with the kind or genre of the writing.
